Many episodes from The Office received backlash. This episode in particular received a lot of it for its use of offensive stereotypes to identify the employees. We wondered what an alternative to this episode would be though. An episode where nothing you say can offend anyone? What would you actually learn from that?
In our struggle to make this video we discovered that we could't both divorce ourselves from offensiveness and also provide the same message as did the original, and that’s the lesson to be learned; The fact that there is no viable way remake this video without the use of stereotypes is what makes it justified and makes The Office in general, a good, positive show.
In the video we have just a simple remake of the show and people react to it the same way that people in real life responded to it. Then we attempt to appease these people, by making a version that’s so politically correct that no one can be offended by it. The director is convinced people will like this version of the office because of that but it’s clear that the host doesn’t agree.
The behaviors portrayed in the actual episode from the show are necessary because they provide examples of what not to do while bringing serious problems to light. They raise awareness about issues such as race and inequality in a very real, and unconventional way. Those that can see past the commentary and the use of the offensive stereotypes can see the underlying messages and themes to be taken away. The show is a good representation of our world and our society.
